26th January 2003: An absolute
disgrace is the only way I can describe that performance at Watford.
How a team that performed so well at Elland Road can perform so badly
just seven days later is a mystery.
The passing was awful, the defending abysmal and the fight was not
there. Watford played well, I will concede, and Lewington said it
was their best performance of the season. But if we had played Charlton
in the same manner, we'd be looking at a four or five goal defeat.
Roberts was ineffective and didn't even moan too much about being
fouled. OK, the pitch wasn't the best, but he just didn't look interested,
or even competent! Watford won virtually everything in the air, all
the second balls and made Albion look more like a struggling second
division side rather than a Premiership one.
I just hope we haven't used up our quota of luck for the season, because
we should have lost by a much bigger margin.
Maybe it'll be a shot in the arm or something, but maybe I'm clutching
at straws. Wednesday night is so important and we have to be in the
right frame of mind - this will not help. If we play like that in
the league, we'll be down before the end of March.
