16th March 2003: Forget relegation,
I've decided to talk about something different.
What is it with the PA announcer at the Hawthorns? Does he not watch
any football on TV or does he always pronounce players' names wrong
on purpose?
Poor old Siggy has always been "Lawrence" as far as he is concerned,
and I suppose you can forgive his iffy version of Udeze's name (Ifeenee
You-deazee!), but when Premiership players we've all watched on telly
for years come to the Hawthorns, he reads their names out as if they're
from a visiting Norwegian second division team - i.e. players he's
never heard of. I'm talking about the likes of Solksjaer and Djorkaeff,
names that any self-respecting football fan has heard a thousand times
and can easily pronounce, but that our PA bloke gets hopelessly wrong.
I think I rumbled him today though. When reading the teamsheet before
the game, he pronouned Desailly's name correctly, but when the Frenchman
came on, he called him De-sally.
Is he stupid, is he like Mick Channon who insisted on calling Gary
Lineker "Line-acre" or is this his own way of trying to tell the Premiership
stars that they're not household names in the Black Country?
