13th April 2003: Hurrah, a goal!
And a penalty to boot - isn't that a turn up for the books? Steve
Bennett, who last referee-ed a Baggies game at Old Trafford on the
opening day (sending McInness off, of course), was the man to finally
give that decision. I did, however, think his all-round performance
was poor even if he did give Albion a number of somewhat dubious decisions.
As for the game, poor old Russell Hoult, who has certainly done us
proud this season (more in keeping our goal difference down rather
than winning points), dropped two almighty clangers in one game, and
a game we were playing well in at that. But I'm sure we can forgive
him.
It's a strange experience watching the Albion at the moment. Relegation
is all but a certainty, but the fans are as vocal as ever in their
support and still supportive. There are few moans, no boos when we
lose, and singing throughout particularly away. There is recognition
that even being in this league is a magnificent achievement for this
club, and it's a credit to the fans that that is the case.
Because of our tremendous and un-wilting support, let's hope the lads
can repay us by beating the Black Cats next week ensuring we stay
off the bottom of the pile. It may be worth little in real terms,
but it means something to the fans.
A final word about our fantastic PA announcer who produce another
classic pronunciation yesterday reducing Everton's Chinese international
Li Tie to a French golf accessory - "Le Tee". Marvellous!
