13th August 2003: That's better!
Maybe not the complete performance we were hoping for, but four goals
in the 'for' column and none conceded can't really be cause for complaint.
In my opinion, Hughes changed the game when he came on. Hulse and
Dichio are not different enough to play together - they were going
for the same balls to often, neither was dropping off to pick up any
flicks. When the Ninja came on, suddenly the defenders were pulled
all over the place and space was created. It should be enough to earn
him a starting place for Saturday, but with Megson you never know.
It was my first look at the new signings tonight, and I'm generally
pleased. Volmer and Gaardsoe both look like solid defenders and can
pass the ball (Siggy, take note), O'Connor was excellent - busy, tough
and with good distribution. Sakiri didn't look 100% but showed some
intelligent touches and lasted the 90 minutes. Hulse took both goals
well but I think he will look better along side either Hughes or Dobie.
As for Haas, I'd heard that "he's not a wing back" - you could've
fooled me. He got forward well, used the ball intelligently and defended
well. I can't fault GM's transfer dealings so far.
And as for Wigan's bid for Roberts - £1.5 million? - wake up!
