21st September 2003: One point
instead of three, but at least we didn't lose like West Ham, Forest
and Reading. For me, it was not a good performance from the Albion,
but we did look the better side throughout. The main weakness was
at the back, particularly after Siggy went off - we looked very shaky
and never looked particularly comfortable when we were ahead. It was
particularly galling to concede an equaliser having gone in front
so late, but the stoppage time was probably about right.
N'Dour was certainly no revelation at left wing back, but he probably
deserves another opportunity to see if he can displace Clement on
a more permanent basis. I didn't agree with O'Connor being left out
as he has been one of our most consistent performers so far this season,
but when he did come on he didn't play particularly well and must
certainly shoulder some of the blame for the first goal.
Not one of the Albion players played as well as they can and I'm sure
they all know it. But it's another point on the total and we've only
lost ground to Wigan, who are unlikely to be real challengers late
on this season. And if this Albion side does start to click, which
it hasn't yet, somebody is going to get a right tonking.
After a tough trip to Hartlepool, who have started their season well
but lost at Brentford yesterday, we've got two very important home
games which is likely to be the start of five home games in six with
the Cardiff trip likely to be postponed due to international call
ups. If we can capitalise on that and get to the top of the table,
with maybe a decent lead, it will hopefully give us the confidence
that will make us very difficult to dislodge.
