23rd September 2003: At least we're through, but reports suggest that it was another unconvincing performance from the Baggies.

Megson was forced into another change in the back three as Sigurdsson failed to pass a fitness test, with Berthe making his debut - I suppose that can't help with new players trying to get used to one another. Gaardsoe seems to have someone different next to him all the time. Gregan appears to have been dropped with O'Connor starting with Johnson and Koumas - I can't say I'm surprised as it hasn't been Greegs best season.

It seems that N'Dour may have missed his chance with Clem replacing him, supplying the pass that put Dobie through for the professional foul and then scoring the free kick. According to the commentary team, Johnson played well and Dobie was also good after he replaced Hughes. He may not get his opportunity to start on Saturday, however, as he was injured late on and was replaced by Deech.

It does appear that Megson still doesn't know his best eleven, but the recent disruption due to, albeit minor, injuries is obviously confusing the situation, as are the apparent inconsistent performances for many of the players. That could, of course, be part of a vicious circle with the players still getting used to playing with one group to find the next time, it's a different selection.

Against Ipswich, I thought we were making progress, but it appears from the last three games that we're still a long way from perfection. Back at home on Saturday, we need to get back on track.

On another point, I'm pleased to see JR back on the goal trail with a brace for Portsmouth this evening. Whatever his long term future, if he has a good season it will be good for West Bromwich Albion in the long run.
