1st October 2003: JK's injury
appears, thankfully, to be relatively minor although he is doubtful
for Saturday's trip to Gillingham. As he is suspended for Wales' game
the following week, he's got more than two weeks to get over a minor
hamstring problem. After Albion's performance without the Welsh Wizard,
we should go to Priestfield looking to get another three points even
if our star player doesn't make it.
Big Berthe was, in my opinion, the most impressive performer against
Millwall as he comfortably settled into the back three and produced
an accomplished display. I can't remember him making a mistake and
he looked quick, strong and good on the ball and his deficiency in
the English language didn't seem to pose a problem in communicating
with his fellow teammates - although he had a Dane on one side and
a Swiss on the other, so who knows what language they share!
The first 45 was a superb performance by the Baggies - and I mean
the first 45, not the stoppage time in which we conceded. Both wing
backs got forward well, the front two both worked hard with Hulse
having his best overall display in an Albion shirt for me, despite
not getting on the scoresheet, and the passing and movement in midfield
was excellent, with Johnson and O'Connor both supporting the forward
line well. In the second half, the defence came into its own and never
really looked like conceding. Berthe, Gaardsoe and Gilchrist looked
like they'd played together for years as the resisted the Millwall
attack time and time again. Both wing backs also contributed well
in defence as did, when necessary, Johnson, Gregan and O'Connor dropping
in to cover.
The first half was a sparkling attacking display that we'd like to
see week in week out, whereas the second was a solid defensive display
with excellent teamwork that I'd be happier seeing away from home.
Having said that, Albion still had more and better chances than the
visitors after the break with Hoult only called into action once.
It will be tough at Gillingham as they'll be eager for points as their
last league win was almost a month ago, against Millwall ironically
enough. They can be very strong at home, but we need to go there and
get at them early. If we can score first, I think we'll win.
Come on you Baggies!!
