18th October 2003: A win's a win,
but performance's like the one we saw in the seond half will not bring
many more. Norwich appeared ot have worked us out after half time
and we didn't know how to counter it. The changes Megson made didn't
help, particularly the Sakiri for Dobie substitution which was far
too negative for a home side near the top of the table.
This team is crying out for a 4-4-2 and the game on Tuesday against
Wimbledon is surely the ideal opportunity to try it. I'd prefer to
see it with AJ in the middle with O'Connor, but with Wimbledon in
such poor form, it should be a useful exercise to see how it works.
Let's face it, without playing four in midfield, Megson is never going
to play Koumas and Sakiri in the same side. The effort that Megson
went to to secure Sakiri, I can't believe he saw him as a bit-part
player, so 4-4-2 is the obvious answer. So why hasn't he tried it?
We've been promised more attacking football and, while we've seen
it occasionally, I can't see it happening for sustained periods with
the 3-5-2 formation. There's the constant problem that the midfield
three are never close enough to the front two. If you play with a
diamond, the back of the diamond (O'Connor) could drop into the back
if necessary and the full backs could still push forward with the
front of the diamond (Koumas?) playing in the hole behind the front
two which is notoriously difficult to pick up, and able to break left
or right. We are one of the best sides in this division, and we should
be playing a more attacking style, particularly at home.
Come on GM, let's give it a go. We want to see goals and attractive
football and it's not happening at the moment.
