29th November 2003: Good news
all round for the Baggies as a Koumas-inspired victory consolidates
their position at the top of the table and Darren Moore returns to
first team action as a stoppage-time substitute.
After a difficult week, good news was certainly in demand and it was
perhaps a wise decision to leave Mr Hughes out of the sixteen even
if it did mean we had four defenders and a 'keeper on the bench -
Clem could've gone up front I suppose!! It could've backfired had
we gone behind, but we didn't and substitutions were not really required
in the end.
But it was a big, big win for the Baggies and to get four points from
two tough away games in extremely difficult circumstances just demonstrates
the spirit and professionalism that is present in the Albion squad.
That can only come from one source, and I congratulate Mr Megson for
instilling such qualities, not only this week, but for the past three
and a half years.
Light relief on Wednesday evening then - a win would give us a huge
boost but a defeat will not be a disaster. With West Ham at home on
Saturday, I'd prefer it if extra time could be avoided, but it should
be a great occasion.
As a final footnote, we had a run of three home games in the middle
of last month from which we all hoped for seven or nine points to
give us a cushion going into a tough run of games. We only picked
up three points, but we have since gone seven games unbeaten in all
competitions, five of which were away from home picking up four wins
and three draws. That run included wins at Newcastle and West Ham
- the two home draws may be disappointing, but that's one hell of
a record in anybody's book, and a great way to bounce back from the
mid-October hiccup.
