7th March 2004: Dons doom, Baggies
boom? No true football fan would really wish to see a league club
go into liquidation, but if the outcome of the creditors meeting on
18th March goes against Wimbledon FC, disaster for the homeless club
could provide a boost to Albion's promotion hopes.
I've never really liked Wimbledon and I did not agree with the decision
to relocate to Milton Keynes, but I don't want to see any club go
under. Having said that, if a club does have to go into liquidation,
Wimbledon is the one I would shed fewest tears for. As they have already
abandoned their true fans, very few people will lose "their" football
club. And their is the potential of an added bonus for the Baggies.
If Wimbledon goes into liquidation, I understand that their results
for the season would be removed from the record of all clubs. Albion's
poor displays against the bottom club would be to our advantage as
we would only lose one point from our total. Compare this to our rivals:
Norwich - 6 points, Wigan - 3 points, Sheff Utd - 3 points, West Ham
- 1 point, Millwall - 3 points, Sunderland - 3 points. If that happened
to the current league table, we would be two points clear at the top
and nine clear of third place. Also, with Norwich the only one of
these clubs to have played Wimbledon twice, we would also benefit
in terms of the number of games left to play.
Of course I don't wish for this outcome and the odds are probably
in favour of the creditors accepting the agreement, but that's one
hell of a silver lining...
