10th March 2004: Hammers on a
roll? After a disappointing 0-0 home draw with Walsall, West Ham played
their game in hand on Tuesday evening beating Wimbledon convincingly
5-0.
It was hardly a surprise given that three of Wimbledon's better players
from Albion's 0-0 draw in MK at the end of December were in the West
Ham squad following transfers, coupled with other moves, suspensions
and injuries, the Dons were left with just ten senior pros. Indeed,
if West Ham had failed to win convincingly, it would have cast serious
doubts on their promotion credentials. As it is, they are now level
on points with Wigan, seven behind the Baggies having played the same
number of games.
What I find remarkable is the reaction from the Hammers players and
the manager. A number of quotes after the game were suggesting that
they were suddenly world beaters, and all the pressure is now on Albion
and Norwich. I do think that West Ham and Sunderland are Albion's
biggest threats, despite Wigan's position, and we are there to be
caught. But West Ham are still seven points behind with just eleven
games left and to suggest that an entirely expected victory has suddenly
changed the situation is ridiculous.
And of course, after 18th March, last night's result may prove to
have been pointless.
Well, I can hope....
