10th August 2004: I must admit
to have been surprised by the speculation surrounding Sean Gregan
this summer, which has now come to a head with his transfer request.
He has always been a favourite of Megson and his performances in the
Premiership, and late on last season, were very good. I guess that
the signings of Scimeca, Greening and Gera, and to a lesser extent
Purse and Albrechtsen, have increased competition for his place, but
I'm surprised he has been apparently frozen out so soon.
Admittedly, at times last season he was not worth his place - a fact
that Lord Gary eventually woke up to - but after having been dropped
he returned seemingly back to his best.
The board are right not to accept a cut-down fee for Sean, despite
him only having a year left on his contract. We are by no means flush
with high quality players in midfield (although this could change
with another good signing), and Gregan is a useful squad player to
have if nothing else. I feel a little sorry for the guy, but such
is life.
We can only wait and see if anyone wants him enough.
