4th November 2004: It must be
a very rare occurrence to find both Black Country clubs managerless
at the same time, and even more unusual for a manager to go from one
to another; the first has happened, the second may well happen.
I think Gary Megson is exactly the sort of manager the Dingles require
at the moment, so let's hope he doesn't go there!
Enough of the guys up the road, what of the Baggies situation. Glenn
Hoddle remains favourite and the board may have decided to delay the
appointment to avoid a potentially uncomfortable first game at St
Mary's. On the other hand, it has been suggested that Hoddle may not
want to commit long term to the Baggies which would not meet the board's
requirements.
Strachan is not being talked about at the moment, Paul Jewell was
never a runner from what I can gather, but Bryan Robson seems very
keen. Personally, I'm not sure Bryan has got the coaching ability,
but the past association could make it an attractive option. There
a number of other outsiders including John Gregory (no thanks) and
even Frank Burrows himself. But I expect it to be one of either Hoddle
or Robson.
I think I'd prefer Hoddle, providing he comes with John Gorman, because
I think the two of them make a very good coaching partnership. The
obvious man-management question marks remain about Hoddle, but as
I've said before, he's admitted them publicly which hopefully points
to him having learned from the experience. Robson wouldn't be a bad
choice, and he would certainly have a head start in terms of the crowd.
If he does come, I think he'll need a very good number two.
That's what I think, but we'll have to wait and see.
