4th December 2004: We Albion fans
may think that losing to two late goals at Portsmouth is bad news,
but we must spare a thought for Larus Sigurdsson. The Finnish international
was forced to call time on his playing career, being unable to recover
from a cruciate ligament injury, tragically similar to Michael Appleton.
But unlike Appy, Siggy has been through the recovery process before
as a similar injury kept him on the sidelines for about a year early
on in his Hawthorns career. This time, however, it was not to be.
Siggy was arguably Albion's best defender in the last Premiership
season, although his distribution often left a little to be desired.
Perhaps his most notable achievement was to win a regular place in
Gary Megson's side - Megson sold him to Albion when he was in charge
at Stoke and Siggy was one of very few regulars in Megson's sides
that he hadn't brought to the club himself.
I wish Siggy all the best for the future and I hope he stays in football,
as Appy has done, although I expect him to return to Iceland in the
short term. He has served the Albion well and I remember his one and
only goal, ironically against Pompey, back in 2002. I'm sure he'll
get a great send-off from the Baggies faithful at the Charlton match.
