There's no trophy, no awards ceremony and the winners won't even
know (unless, of course, they are jonwant.com readers!!), but this
is the jonwant.com Player of the Season Awards.
As regular readers will know, I have marked each player out of ten
in each game I have seen this season, and also awarded a Man of
the Match Award for each game. Based on these figures, I have made
my choices for my Player of the Season Awards.
In 3rd Place is DARREN MOORE. He actually
had the highest average rating with 7.07, and had 2 Man of the Match
Awards. Big Dave has once more been a rock at the centre of defence
and, while he may have been done for pace once or twice, he has
proved himself capable of playing in the Premiership. His worth
was noted even more by his absence in the season's run-in.
In 2nd Place is RUSSELL HOULT. With an
average rating of 6.89 and 6 Man of the Match Awards, Russell has
had another good season although he was a little busier than last
year. He didn't manage his goal of ten clean sheets, but six isn't
bad even if three of them were in the first six games!
The jonwant.com Player of the Season was a clear choice. With an
average rating of 7.06 and a staggering 9 Man of the Match Awards,
it goes to SEAN GREGAN. The skipper has
been the most consistent performer of the season, a feat all the
more impressive given that he has spent much of the season out of
position in central defence.
Obviously, a name missing from the list
is the popular choice of Jason Koumas. For pure quality as a footballer,
he would certainly get my vote, and he was a close fourth in my
more scientific method, with 6 MOMs and a rating of 6.77. The reason
he was not higher may have been due to the fact that I missed two
of his most influential performances, against Villa and Sunderland
in December, when I was on holiday! But give me a break, I only
missed three league games this season!!
