More for my own gratification than anything else, here are the jonwant.com Player of the Season Awards for 2003-2004.

As regular readers will know, I (and my guest reporter, Alex, on occasion) have marked each player out of ten in each game I have seen this season, and also awarded a Man of the Match Award for each game. Based on these figures, and a little discretion, I have made my choices for the Player of the Season Awards.

In 3rd Place is LEE HUGHES. This was probably the toughest of the choices but it was average rating of 7.16, coupled with two Man of the Match Awards, that clinched it for Hughesy. In the running were Andy Johnson (6.97 and 2 MOMs), Geoff Horsfield (6.90 and 2 MOMs) and for his immense performances late on in the season, last year's winner Sean Gregan (6.79 and 6 MOMs). But, for me, the Ginger Ninja has consistently put in good performances all season and finished up second highest goalscorer with twelve goals.

In 2nd Place is JASON KOUMAS. His average rating of 6.90 was bettered by Hughes and Johnson but he got 7 Man of the Match Awards, and was frequently a match winner. He had a dip in form in the middle of the season which did bring down his average rating, but he had to get the second place for the many moments of sheer quality that he produced to light up the season.

The jonwant.com Player of the Season was once again a clear choice. With an excellent average rating of 7.39 and an impressive 7 Man of the Match Awards, it goes to THOMAS GAARDSOE. The Great Dane played every minute of every game since he joined (other than those few seconds after he was wrongly dismissed at Millwall), and has been by far the most consistent performer. He is certainly Megson's best signing considering the pittance we paid for him, and I believe he will cut it at Premiership level.

As I mentioned above, Johnson, Horsfield and Gregan were all close to making the top three, but a special mention must also go to Lloyd Dyer who, even as sub, managed an average rating of 7.00, and he was instrumental in changing so many games late on. I will watch his progress with interest.
